META-EVI, META-EWI

The META-EWI and the META-EVI are two musical instruments created from an extensive augmentation of respectively the AKAI EWI3020 wind controller and the Steiner MIDI EVI. Both instruments were expanded with a new set of electronics based on sensor technologies. The main goal of these two projects/instruments consists in achieving performance tools that exhibit truly innovative levels of musical expression that push the level and the meaning of musicianship associated with the player of a monophonic wind instrument to a new plateau of musical complexity.

META-EVI

Tooka

The Tooka is a two person flute. The current version of the Tooka uses two identical sections of hollow flexible tube connected together with a plastic connector to form one continuous tube. At each end is a mouth-piece made from a connector, four buttons and a pressure sensor. The tube’s outside and inside diameters are 1.25” and 1”, respectively, providing a fairly high compliance. When assembled, the Tooka measures 86cm long.

eShofar

eShofar1 (2001 – 2005) is held by the right hand, enclosed within an I-Cube sensor glove. Finger movements upon the body of the shofar thus control the filtering and other sound processing, that is achieved by means of a custom designed Max/MSP software interface. The sounds played on the shofar are mic’d, enhanced and transformed by means of digital sound processing. eShofar2 (2005) uses complex algorithms to create a chaotic improvisational system based on the live performed sounds of the shofar.

Cilia: Flute Controller

This instrument has two parts; a physical ‘flute controller’ and software application (Max/MSP). Only its performance gestures are modeled after the Japanese Shakuhachi, its sound world employing complex synthesis, sample manipulation and re-synthesis techniques. It aspires to be both a nuanced ‘event’ controller (like an acoustic instrument) and a ‘process’ controller. Its mouthpiece splits an air column produced using an open emboucher. Control data is derived from an analysis of the split air column’s dynamics.
